Bringing Life-Saving Care Closer to Home

Located about 20 miles southeast of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, Katani Hospital serves the rapidly growing communities of Machakos County, where access to healthcare has not kept pace with the rapid population growth. In the communities across the Athi River region, many people face barriers to lifesaving care.

Thanks to your support, GHM and Katani Hospital are partnering to launch mobile outreach clinics and medical fairs to tackle three major health challenges: cervical cancer, HIV, and HPV (human papillomavirus). These clinics will expand access to screening, testing, treatment, vaccination, and health education for underserved communities across the Athi River region.

The need is urgent. In 2024, fewer than 100 of more than 55,000 eligible women received HPV-based cervical cancer screening, less than 0.2% coverage. In this region, many women are often diagnosed too late. HIV also remains a major concern, particularly among women and expectant mothers, while HPV vaccination rates among adolescent girls remain far below global targets and standards.

Thanks to your support, these clinics bring preventive care directly to neighborhoods where distance, cost, and health misinformation often prevent people from seeking care. Your support will help:

• Screen 5,000 women for cervical cancer, helping detect cancer earlier when treatment is more effective.

• Provide 3,000 HIV tests with rapid linkage to care and treatment for those who test positive.

• Vaccinate 2,500 adolescent girls and young women against HPV, helping prevent HPV-related cervical cancer.
