Supporting Mothers and Newborns
Newborn kits improve health outcomes for both mother and child.
Mnene’s Mothers’ Waiting Home provides a safe place for pregnant women who live far from the hospital to stay during the final weeks of pregnancy. The home can accommodate up to 56 women and helps mothers receive antenatal care and safely deliver their babies at the hospital.
GHM provides newborn kits, along with baby-care kits and quilts from Lutheran World Relief. These simple gifts provide mothers with essential items for their babies while also encouraging them to seek care before and after delivery. Regular distribution of newborn kits has helped increase the use of maternal health services at Mnene.
The hospital also provides special accommodations for young mothers, including girls as young as 12, helping ensure they receive care in a safe and supportive environment. GHM’s recent shipment also included non-slip socks to help prevent falls and provide warmth during Zimbabwe’s colder months, along with lab coats, PPE, and other essential medical supplies and equipment.
Thobekile’s Story
Thobekile Ncube, 21, was preparing to become a first-time mother. Although her husband’s employment provided some income, she did not have everything she needed for her baby.
The newborn and Baby Care kit helped ease some of that worry and gave Thobekile the confidence to care for her baby. “I had tried to prepare for my birth, but it was not enough. With this support, I can now care for my baby with confidence and peace of mind. I am very happy and thankful, and I pray that the Lord blesses those who made this possible.”
Your support of GHM helps provide the supplies, equipment, and care that mothers, babies, patients, and healthcare workers need. Thank you for helping bring healing and hope to communities in Zimbabwe and around the world.
