Democratic Republic of the Congo

A Growing Partnership with Local Roots

CELCCO (Community of Confessional Lutheran Churches of the Congo) is an indigenous Lutheran church in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), founded and led by local believers—not by international missionaries. With a strong commitment to both evangelism and community development, CELCCO currently comprises over 14,000 members, 78 congregations, and 95 pastors. The church has made impressive strides in healthcare by establishing 21 health stations and two nursing schools.

Unique to the DRC is the vital role CELCCO’s laymen’s group plays in fundraising and overseeing the church’s development initiatives, including healthcare.

Strategic priorities for GHM and CELCCO are:

Infrastructure Improvements

  • Enhance hygiene and sanitation

  • Ensure access to clean water

  • Establish reliable electricity

Care Quality Improvements

  • Improve diagnostic capacity

  • Reduce risk of infection for both inpatients and outpatients

Revenue-Generating Services

  • Expand lab testing

  • Introduce imaging services

  • Develop surgical capacity
