"Mission in a Changing World"Global Health Ministries’ annual Fall conference will be held this year at Incarnation Lutheran Church in Shoreview, Minnesota on Saturday, October 11, 2008. The Conference theme, “Mission in a Changing World,” will be explored through a plenary Keynote address, followed by four topical workshops. Our Keynote speaker, Dr. Mark Jacobson, is an internationally respected medical missionary serving Selian Lutheran Hospital in Arusha, Tanzania. Over his 20 years of service as Director of Selian, Dr. Jacobson has seen and adapted to many changes, and been the agent of important changes himself. Among the issues he will address: Sustainability, a buzz word in missions these days, but its meaning and critical implications are rarely well-defined; the developing world Brain Drain that is making it increasingly difficult to recruit and hold on to the “best and the brightest” for mission service; the model of mission health care as a business that is replacing the model of externally subsidized missions. Is this good for mission or incompatible? Inescapably, AIDS as the biggest change agent of all on mission health care must be addressed. Finally, the phenomenon of the “end-of-career” missionary will be examined for its great opportunities and impact on the future of missions. Conference registration and coffee begin at 8:15 am. The cost is $17.00 for individuals and $50.00 for families if registered in advance and received by October 1st, or $18.00 and $55.00 at the door. Lunch is included. The conference is sponsored by Global Health Ministries, a network of people dedicated to “continue the healing ministry of Jesus Christ” through support of Lutheran health care work overseas by funding projects, sending mission personnel and shipping medical supplies and equipment.
